Who will play Who in possible Doctor Who movie?
Posted on December 14th, 2011 at 6:02 am by SBGLA

Rumours about the popular BBC series Doctor Who being adapted for the big screen have been swirling around for years, but the rumours have become even more rampant ever since director David Yates, best known for helming multiple Harry Potter films, mentioned that he will possibly be developing a feature adaptation.
Furthermore, Yates had Doctor Who fans pondering which actor would portray the iconic Time Lord in the feature film after Yates was quoted as saying Doctor Who series producers Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffat “have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch.” The truth is that only Yates knows just how much reinvention he would apply in terms of casting and character development, but that fact obviously does not stop the rest of us from speculating.
However, the legitimacy of Yates’s account of the Doctor Who movie became less reliable after Moffat, the current executive producer of the Doctor Who series, more recently said: “There are no developed plans for a Doctor Who movie at the moment.” He added: “But if and when the movie happens it will need to star television’s Doctor Who – and there’s only ever one of those at a time.” With reference to Yates’s statements, Moffat said: “The brilliant David Yates was talking off the cuff and a little prematurely.”
Moffat may insist that the actor personifying the Doctor on television (currently Matt Smith) must also play him in the movie, but if the movie takes two or three years to manifest, Smith might not still be playing the character. Therefore, the question remains… Who will star in the possible Doctor Who movie? Only time, or a Time Lord, can tell.
Doctor Who’s Matt Smith Goes on a Sarah Jane Adventure!

Doctor Who fanatics will especially be excited about the upcoming story arc on the telly series The Sarah Jane Adventures when actor Matt Smith, the current incarnation of Doctor Who, makes a guest appearance on the show as the time lord. Smith will not be the only special guest star though as actress Katy Manning, reprising the classic Doctor Who character of Jo Grant from the 70s, will also be joining Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane on the upcoming adventure.
Manning has a sound vantage of the Doctor Who universe after returning to it after more than 30 years. When asked about the new version of Doctor Who as portrayed by Smith, to TV Choice magazine Manning said: “His physicality is one of the most extraordinary things I have seen. I think it’s wonderful and so appropriate, so creative with this new Doctor. I mean look at the acts this young boy’s had to follow! It isn’t easy and I think he has done a miraculous job, from the moment I saw him.”
In the two-part story called “Death of the Doctor,” Sarah Jane and Jo Grant are informed that the Doctor has died. The two former time lord companions meet at his funeral and find themselves in a perilous situation. Regarding the episodes, Sladen, who plays the title character, said: “It’s a fantastic script and I can’t wait to work with another Doctor and hope Matt has fun with us. I’ve known Katy for ages and I am delighted to be working with her.”
The script for “Death of the Doctor” has been written by the brilliant exec. producer Russell T. Davies and the episodes are scheduled to air on the CBBC on the 25th and the 26th of October.
It looks like this will be Sarah Jane’s biggest adventure yet!
Torchwood Blazes Trail Toward International Success!

The British sci-fi series Torchwood continues to gain fantastic momentum in America as development of the show’s fourth season commences. Last June, U.S. premium cable television channel Starz agreed to co-finance as well as carry the Doctor Who spinoff on its network and now Torchwood has expanded its writing staff to include A-list American sci-fi story tellers as well.
The three new writers are Doris Egan, who worked on House, Jane Espenson who wrote for Battlestar Galactica (one of my personal favorites), and John Shiban, who contributed to The X-Files. Original cast members John Barrowman and Eve Myles are set to reprise their roles of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper respectively. The show goes back into production, this time in North America, in January and will air next summer.
The skills of all of these talented people combined with the brilliant guidance of creator Russell T. Davies are sure to make the fourth season of Torchwood the best one yet! Thank our lucky Starz!
Johnny Depp to play Doctor Who?!?!?

Johnny Depp is reportedly in negotiations to play the title character in a feature film adaptation of the popular BBC series Doctor Who. While nothing is confirmed, rumours of the television series getting a big-budget Hollywood makeover have been swirling ever since former DW head writer and executive producer Russell T. Davies moved to Los Angeles two years ago, leaving the show behind in England.
Davies, who is credited with reviving the legendary sci-fi series in 2005, has said: “Bringing the Who franchise to the theaters is a regeneration for the character beyond the usual one. A theatrical release has a greater range and can reach millions of more people than just the fans.”
Davies added: “There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television programme. But none of us working the film will forget what makes the character great and interesting and the long-time fans will not be disappointed because yes, the [infamous characters called] Daleks make an appearance.”
Davies has not officially commented on who he would like to see play the theatrical version of the Time Lord and no other news about the project’s development has been made public. Meanwhile, the television series, starring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, continues to thrive. Smith is the eleventh actor to portray Doctor Who on the small screen since 1963.
Most would agree that it’s about bloody time a Doctor Who feature film was made, but I’m not certain Depp is the best man to bring the Time Lord to the big screen. Considering his popularity, I can understand why the Pirates of the Caribbean actor would be considered for the role; however, Depp is American and everyone knows Doctor Who is a British show. There must be some other talented actor out there who is actually British to better personify this traditionally BRITISH character for the movie-going masses. Next thing you know, they’re going to cast a Brit to play an American superhero like Spider-Man or something crazy like that! Oh wait…
