James Bond has a Date with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo!

Posted on July 26th, 2010 at 5:59 pm by

Although we will not be seeing Daniel Craig as James Bond again anytime soon, due to MGM’s bankruptcy, Craig fans will still be able to get their dose of the British actor in the upcoming Hollywood remake of the popular Swedish film, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, as first reported by Deadline New York. Craig is rumored to have beaten out George Clooney, Johnny Depp, and Brad Pitt for the lead role.

Originally a novel by late Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson titled Män som hatar kvinnor (which literally translates to “Men Who Hate Women”), the story follows a middle-aged journalist, Mikael Blomkvist (Craig), as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of a girl who went missing forty years earlier at the age of sixteen.  The story is the first of three that make up what is called The Millenium Trilogy. The next two books in the series are titled respectively The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest.

If Sony Pictures Entertainment goes forward with adapting all three Millenium books into films, Craig will be the first Bond actor to have been featured as the lead character in two separate movie franchises. The rest of the cast of the American version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has not been announced yet, but the film has been slated for release on December 21, 2011.

Congratulations to Mr. Craig for winning the highly coveted role!

Johnny Depp to play Doctor Who?!?!?

Posted on June 30th, 2010 at 8:51 am by

Johnny Depp is reportedly in negotiations to play the title character in a feature film adaptation of the popular BBC series Doctor Who. While nothing is confirmed, rumours of the television series getting a big-budget Hollywood makeover have been swirling ever since former DW head writer and executive producer Russell T. Davies moved to Los Angeles two years ago, leaving the show behind in England.

Davies, who is credited with reviving the legendary sci-fi series in 2005, has said: “Bringing the Who franchise to the theaters is a regeneration for the character beyond the usual one. A theatrical release has a greater range and can reach millions of more people than just the fans.”

Davies added: “There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television programme. But none of us working the film will forget what makes the character great and interesting and the long-time fans will not be disappointed because yes, the [infamous characters called] Daleks make an appearance.”

Davies has not officially commented on who he would like to see play the theatrical version of the Time Lord and no other news about the project’s development has been made public. Meanwhile, the television series, starring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, continues to thrive. Smith is the eleventh actor to portray Doctor Who on the small screen since 1963.

Most would agree that it’s about bloody time a Doctor Who feature film was made, but I’m not certain Depp is the best man to bring the Time Lord to the big screen. Considering his popularity, I can understand why the Pirates of the Caribbean actor would be considered for the role; however, Depp is American and everyone knows Doctor Who is a British show. There must be some other talented actor out there who is actually British to better personify this traditionally BRITISH character for the movie-going masses. Next thing you know, they’re going to cast a Brit to play an American superhero like Spider-Man or something crazy like that! Oh wait…

Keira’s Ship Sails As Penelope Cruises With Pirates!

The ‘Duchess’ of Hollywood Keira Knightley says ‘seeya me hearties!’ to Pirates of the Caribbean!

Knightley who shot to fame in 2003 playing Elizabeth Swan in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, has confirmed that she will NOT be reprising her role in the fourth Pirates flick.

Knightley said: “I said when I finished the trilogy that that was going to be it — I had a wonderful time on it and I met some extraordinary people but you know, I think, for me three is enough, definitely,”

Blooming Hell… Orlando’s Quit Too!

Posted on January 27th, 2010 at 8:16 am by

Your guess is as good as mine when wondering how the next will Pirates of the Caribbean will turn out, especially after this bit of news just winged its way to my email’s inbox!

First Keira Knightly’s ship set sail and now Orlando Bloom has announced he’s off too… Off to where we’re not quite sure, as this would appear to be not one of the smartest career moves he’s made.

Bloom said: “I think Will is sort of swimming around with the fish at the bottom of the ocean. I had a great time making those movies. I just really wanted to do different things.”

The heartthrob star also admitted he couldn’t wait to see the latest Pirates sequel, being directed by Rob Marshall: “I think it’s going to be great. Whatever Johnny does, I think it’s fantastic. I think he’s (Marshall) an amazing director. I think it will be a very interesting fit, because Johnny is musical anyway and I’m sure that something really beautiful will come out of it.”

So the search is on to find Johnny Depp a new right hand man, who’ll be the next Will Turner? The rumors swirling in Tinseltown say that an unknown actor by the name of Sam Claflin and Jeremy Irons Max are both in the frame to climb into Orlando’s pants.

I’m sure the casting directors have total eye candy on their minds first when considering their choices, sadly talent always seems to take a back seat in Hollywood these days. Nevertheless, the movie won’t be the same without Bloomy and that’s for certain!
