JJ Abrams, who helped reboot the franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens will direct the upcoming movie.

Abrams’ appointment comes after the exit of former director Colin Trevorrow. Oo-er!

He will direct the film and co-write it with Chris Terrio.

The news was announced by Disney and Lucasfilm in a statement on Tuesday.

Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, said: “With The Force Awakens, JJ delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy.”

Trevorrow left the film after it was claimed he couldn’t see “eye to eye” with Disney in regards to the script of the last instalment of the trilogy.

He exited before pre-production got any further underway.

It was originally planned that production on the film would begin in February 2018, however it is not still clear if that will go ahead.

Force Awakens and Rogue One were both box office hits, so Abrams has got a high standard to meet for the next film.

It is rumoured that Mark Hamill will take on the role of Luke Skywalker in the film.

Meanwhile Andy Serkis and Lupita Nyong’o are also suggested to appear.

The film is currently scheduled to be released on May 24, 2019.
